Great Britain : Community union achieves end of zero hour contracts at postal company, Whistl

The Community union has achieved a breakthrough by negotiating an end to zero hour contracts for its members at Whistl. It has done so through a partnership approach with the employer which has also resulted in advances on the payment of the ‘living wage’ and employer pension contributions to the company’s employees.

Whistl, formerly known as TNT Post, has signed an agreement with the Community union to end the use of zero hour contracts in its operations. The negotiations that led to the ending of their use were part of wider negotiations on pay and conditions at the company.

After six months service all workers in Whistl’s end-to-end delivery units, who are currently on zero hours contracts, will be initially offered new contracts which give guaranteed hours calculated by using an average of the hours work
