Great Britain: consultation on employees’ auto-enrolment to their company’s professional pension fund

Auto-enrolment. What is it? Angela Eagle, Minister for Pensions and the Ageing Society, explained: “These landmark reforms, on a scale unprecedented anywhere in the world, will ensure millions of workers on low and moderate incomes will be able to save for retirement in a workplace pension for the first time. Our reforms mean people will receive a mandatory employer contribution and tax relief from the State.” The new auto-enrolment duty applying to the employer means that eligible workers will automatically be enrolled on their company’s professional pension scheme, with no active decision made by the employee. Currently, many workers let pretty sizeable benefits go by because they didn’t ask to join their employer’s scheme.
