On 22 September a group of workers announced on Twitter and in the press, the foundation of the first British trade union dedicated solely to the technology sector. The United Tech and Allied Workers (UTAW), is a new branch of the Communications Workers Union (CWU- postal services) and is aiming to have at least one hundred people join in the first two months, including employees from Google and Microsoft.
In a press statement on 22 September John Chadfield, a founding member of UTAW, which is the first British union exclusively dedicated to the new technology sector, said “Workers have seen through the bubble of ping pong tables, free t-shirts and desk beers” (Ed note: beer deliveries to the office).
