The Minister of the Interior presented, March 7, 2006, a plan to implement a selective immigration policy, privileging skilled immigrants and creating a points system. Its objective is to restrict immigration from non EU countries to workers and students who contribute to the British economy, and to protect the borders against non-desired immigration. (Ref. 06223)
The plan defines five categories of immigrants, according to their competences. They are presented as follows, in the terms of the ministry:
- category 1: highly qualified, for example scientists or entrepreneurs.
- category 2: qualified and have a job offer, for example nurses, teachers, engineers. However, a job offer does not guarantee access to the United Kingdom.
