Chief measure of the government's fight against illegal labor, biometric ID cards will now be mandatory for foreign nationals willing to enter or stay in the country. The trade unions, together with the opposition and the groups defending civil liberties, are strongly opposed to it. (Ref. 080749)
The new ID card, the size of a credit card, will show the individual’s picture, name, date of birth, nationality and immigration status. An e-chip will also contain biometric information, such as two fingerprints and a digital image of the face. From November 25, 2008 and in three years, all foreigners who want to enter or stay on the British soil will have to own this card. 90% of foreign nationals will have this card by 2014-15, the government plans.
