Great Britain: law transposing temporary work directive postponed to October 2011

Help businesses recover from the economic crisis. The European directive on agency workers gives them more rights, including the right to equal pay with permanent workers after 12 weeks in a workplace. The British government decided to enact the transposition of the law in the next parliamentary session, but it will not be implemented until October 2011, shortly before the European deadline (December 2011). Besides, the law granting employees “time to train,” due to be implemented for employers with more than 250 staff from next April, will be deferred for smaller employers until April 2011.  The government will also postpone indefinitely a plan to increase the number of civic roles for which staff will be entitled to time off. In all, 26 planned regulations will be delayed to take account of current economic circumstances. They cover issues from the display of tobacco products to regulation of acupuncture, but it is the employment measures that will give most relief to business.
