Great Britain: Len McCluskey becomes the new general secretary of the biggest union in Britain, Unite

This represents a decisive victory for the left, albeit a divided left, for the total left vote was 153,000 votes (McCluskey plus Hicks) while the combined rightwing and centre-left vote was 85,000 (Bayliss and Cartmail). Not only is Unite the biggest union in Britain but McCluskey becomes its first sole general secretary. He will assume office when Tony Woodley, one of the current joint general secretaries stands down on 31 December 2011. Derek Simpson, the other current joint general secretaries stands down on 31 December 2010. However, given that Woodley supported McCluskey, McCluskey’s period of office may start well before this.
