A study by the trade union confederation TUC reveals a significant increase in the number of people working more than 48 hours a week whereas figures had been decreasing for ten years. For the TUC and the organizations which defend work-life balance, this is a social regression. (Ref. 071007)
After ten years of cut in working time, the trend seems to be reversing. More than one in eight people now work more than 48 hours a week, rising to one in six in London. A recent survey from Labour Force shows a 13% increase in the number of people working over 48 hours a week, that is a total of 3.242.000 workers. The biggest increase was recorded in south-eastern England (from 28.000 to 525.000 people,) as well as in London (from 25.000 to 481.000 people).
