The Sports Direct company founder, Mike Ashley, is being called before Members of Parliament (MPs) at the House of Commons over the treatment of employees at the company’s USC retail business and its use of zero-hours contracts. This marks a growing tendency for the Scottish Affairs Committee to exert influence over the politics of the regulation of employment relations.
The inquiry by the Westminster Parliament’s Scottish Affairs Committee, led by Labour MP Ian Davidson, into how about 200 staff at USC’s Ayrshire warehouse lost their jobs when administrators were called in to wind up the business is the latest in a growing list of cases where the Committee is exerting a powerful influence over how employment relations are conducted.
