Peugeot SA decided to close the British factory of Ryton which employs 2 300 people. The site which produces the 206 model, close to Coventry, will be stopped mid 2007. (Ref. 06380)
It is the second hard blow for the Midlands area, just a year after the closing of Rover at Longbridge and the removal of 6 000 jobs. Even though Peugeot is a French group, this news seems to seal the death of the British car industry, which was for a long time the jewel of the national economy and is no longer profitable today.
