Great Britain: RMT union to intensify campaign for the fair treatment of cleaners and catering staff across the transport industry

The RMT argues that the victory was secured as a result of the ‘strength, solidarity and sheer courage’ of its members and that this shows to 'low paid workers everywhere that if you organise in a trade union, and are prepared to put up a fight that you can win'. The union is now stepping up campaigns for a fair deal for cleaners and catering staff across the transport industry and the model used in the strike will be rolled out to other companies. However, the victory at Carlisle Cleaning and Support Services members on the Virgin West Coast Main Line is not explicable alone by the ‘strength, solidarity and sheer courage’ of its members and thus it is unlikely that the RMT or any other union will be able to successfully apply the tactics deployed here elsewhere.
