Members of the CWU communications union voted by 4:1 on a 63% turnout to strike. The privatisation battle was lost but the union wants to keep fighting for pay, terms and conditions. Action will take the form of strikes (national, regional) which have the ability to bring the postal system to a halt and at the busiest time of the year (the run up to Christmas). (Ref. 130628)
The union announced that the first action will be a one-day strike on 4 November. This was despite the company being privatised and its shares floated on the Stock Exchange earlier this week. The price of shares increased by almost 50% and almost none of the postal workers declined to accept their free shares (although these cannot be sold for three years).
