The Community general union has announced that it will be recruiting freelance and self-employed workers to reflect both the growth of these workers in the economy at large and their growth in the specific sectors where the union is active (steel manufacturing, textiles, social care, betting shops, charities, logistics and custodial services).
The closure of the Redcar steel workers, with the loss of 1,700 jobs, represents an example of the challenging reality the union is facing. The Community union was formed in 2004 with its main component being the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation. In a move towards community unionism, it sought to follow its members as they retrained and found jobs elsewhere following redundancy programs put in place as the steel industry shrank.
