The 500 representatives of the GMB union have massively rejected today the merger project with Amicus and TGWU, which could have given birth to a super-union of 2.6 million members, the same number as the German union Verdi. (Ref. 06612)

The reasons of this rejection. GMB (Britain’s general union) has a strong regional structure, contrary to the two others that are rather centralized. This made some fear a weakening of the organization. On the other hand, GMB has won new members and improved its finance during the last months, making the financial motivations of this merger decline. Then the representatives have followed their leaders who had recommended not to carry on the discussions.
