As the wave of workers coming from Eastern Europe – 600 000 people since 2004 – is causing worries to the British society, the trade union confederation TUC, during its annual congress, officially updated its optinion. It is firmly opposed to restricting immigration from Bulgaria and Romania, next in line for the entry in the European Union. The government had not totally ruled out this possibility in order to restrain the influx of new immigrants. (Ref. 06896)
The employment rate has not stopped to increase over the past few years, but the unemployment rate has also increased, and salary increases have slowed. Some say it is due to immigration, which provides employers with an obedient and cheap workforce that does not worry about the social legislation and brings unfair competition to British workers. They also underline the financial burden on public services, health, welfare, and so on.
