The Society of Radiographers has joined the ranks of those unions with a political fund to allow it engage in political campaigning. Members of the Society voted by 93% (with a 24% turnout of its 28,000 members) in a ballot to establish the political fund that was sparked by changes to legislation on lobbying which meant that unions would be unable to campaign and speak out about issues during election campaigns unless they had a separate specific fund.
Meanwhile, the construction union, UCATT, has voted to renew its political fund. On a turnout of 20%, 97% of members voted for the continuation of the fund. UCATT is the last major union to join the likes of the PCS union in 2015, RMT, GMB, CWU and UNISON unions in 2014 and Prospect, Usdaw and Unite unions in 2013 in renewing their political fund. In this, the fourth round of the statutory ten-year required balloting process; no union with an existing political fund has failed to win the ballot
