Great Britain: two million civil servants strike against pension reform

High turnout.  British unions won a victory, claiming that two million civil servants went on strike on November 30 – government says 1.2.  According to the Department for Education, 62% of public schools were closed in England, 14% were partly on strike.  Same rate in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.  There was not a single bus or train in Northern Ireland, while hospitals were greatly slowed down by the civil servants’ strike.  However, there were no major disruptions in air transport.  According to the Local Government Association, around 30% of council employees in England and Wales were not working, equating to around 670,000 staff.  Some Ministries went on strike as well, up to 90% for the tax department, notably.  About 250,000 public sector workers went on strike in Scotland and 170,000 in Wales.  These hundreds of thousands of civil servants marched in the country’s key cities.
