Two UK drivers have taken chauffeur firm Uber to the employment tribunal arguing they should be considered as employees. This test case could have repercussions for the high profile US app and halt the excessive use of independent workers.
The right to enjoy holiday and sick pay like any other regular employee is what both drivers are trying to secure from Uber in taking the US company to the labor tribunal. Proceedings, which commenced Tuesday 19 July, are expected to continue until next week. Lawyers for the complainants hold that the control Uber exercises over its drivers is not in line with their status as independent workers.
