The General Council is comprised of around thirty members of the affiliated unions, some of which have seats automatically because of their size (over 200,000 members) and others from the smaller unions because they are elected on to it in a ballot held at the annual conference. At the June meeting, there was only one dissenting voice, that of the Fire Brigades’ Union general secretary. All the other unions which are represented and were present at the meeting agreed that it was sensible to invite Cameron.
