Financing this May’s general election is a challenge for the indebted opposition Labour party. The Unite union has started the donation ball rolling with a promise of £1.5m and perhaps more later on. Many of Labour’s election policy commitments, though not all, accord with Unite’s own policies. Other unions are expected to follow suit as Labour looks to raise £12m.
The Unite union, through its national Executive Council, has agreed to donate £1.5m to the Labour Party’s campaign funds for the forthcoming general election on May 7. In a statement, the union’s executive expressed concern that the Tory-led coalition government could be re-elected on a ‘tide of big business cash’ while Labour remains under-resourced.
