Every year, the national council for the reconciliation of interests (OÉT), which gathers the social partners at the national level and the Ministry of Labour, fixes the amount of the minimum wage and adopts recommendations for wage increases. The wage negotiations for 2007 were very tensed. Initially, employers proposed a rise ranging between 5 and 8%, whereas the trade unions claimed at least 6%. The trade unions and employers found, last 30 January, an agreement on the rises of the wages at the national level for 2007 and which should range between 5.5 and 8 %. the agreement was reached at the last minute, one day before a nation-wide strike called by trade unions. (Ref. 070106)
