In brief, new European rules on posted workers have been definitively adopted

The European parliament has given the go ahead to what is effectively a compromise negotiated between the EU Member States (c.f. article No. 10610), and as such marks an end to the adoption procedure for the new Directive on posted workers. The new Directive that is expected to be transposed by 2020 holds to the principle of equal pay for equal work carried out in the same place and it restricts posted workers’ missions to 12 months, with a 6-month extension to this being possible. Amendments sought by the extreme-right ENF and ultra-conservative ECR parties weren’t voted on Tuesday 29 May, with three quarters of the Parliament’s deputies having previously indicated their support for the compromise. On 11 April all the EU Member States declared in favor of the text with the exception of Poland and Hungary that voted against, and with the UK, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, and Croatia opting to abstain.
