The Aadhaar is a unique identity number linked to individuals’ demographic and biometric information. With no identity card system in place in India, this unique identity number allows more and more human resources professionals to easily identify their recruits. However, as the number gets used increasingly in Indian people’s everyday life, defenders of civil liberties are becoming more and more concerned.
At the Delhi offices of Ikya, a recruitment company which specialises in client-facing services, dozens of young men crowd the entrance hall, trying to find a space. Queues form, leading from the corridors to the offices, with none of the potential candidates appearing to be older than 25.
