The Forum for IT Employees (FITE) is preparing to file an application to the government of Tamil Nadu state in India and become the first trade union for tech workers in the country. The news comes at a time of crisis for the sector, which employs around 4 million people in India, with the local press continually reporting of mass lay-offs.
Vasumathi, the president of the FITE, says: “We already function as a union and we are planning to register in each state anyway.” The organisation, in which members only reply to their first names for activist reasons, would become the first official tech trade union in India. It is made up of IT and services sector employees and launched its first campaign against mass lay-offs in the IT sector in 2014.
