International: auto unions adopt a resolution on collective bargaining

Soaring precariousness. Delegates from 13 countries met earlier this month to discuss the situation of auto workers.  In a resolution, they point to the worsening working conditions in the sector, saying that employers are increasingly appealing to precarious forms of employment such as temporary and contract work.  “Employers claim that they need the flexibility that comes with the use of non-standard work arrangements, but workers and society as a whole pay a tremendous price for the precarious work created by such arrangements.”  They especially point to the fact that some workers are often denied “union representation, decent wages, job security, stable hours and benefits.” The resolution also points to the hypocrisy of some carmakers who rely on a network of agencies and subcontractors to avoid “providing good wages and benefits.”
