Members from the British union of Rail and Maritime Transport Workers (RMT) and those of the Offshore Industry Liaison Committee (OILC) voted, on February 14, in favor of a merger of the two organizations in order to create a unique structure to defend offshore workers' interests. (Ref. 080168)
The general secretary of the OILC (which represents about 2.000 workers), Jake Molloy, was elected lead officer of the new structure, which is now an integral part of the RMT union. “This is an historic day for trade unionism in the offshore sector”, declared Jake Molloy. “Together we will have the resources and the experience to organize for better safety and to win better pay and conditions and job security for offshore workers” he went on.
