Ireland: Waterford Crystal sit-in enters sixth week

Fears of being bought by a private equity fund. The world-famous Waterford Wedgewood Group, which produces Wedgewood Crystal in Kilbarry, County Waterford in the Republic of Ireland, as well as the Royal Doulton and Wedgewood ceramic brands across various plants worldwide filed for bankruptcy protection in early January. The fear of seeing the Waterford factory close began when news of at least two interested buyers from the private equity markets reached the workers. On February 2, the separate receiver for Ireland hired security staff to close the building, but closure was frustrated as around 200 workers forced entry and initiated a ‘sit-in’. The on-going 24-hour occupation of both the production plant and the Waterford Crystal Visitors’ Center is now entering its sixth week.
