The general committee of the Fiom union called for an 8-hour general strike for this month to protest the latest government policy. Workers assemblies and protests against the violence perpetrated by the police during a demonstration by ThyssemKrupp workers at Terni, which resulted in several union members being injured, are also being scheduled. The climate between the government and unions is getting increasingly tense amid a growing wave of worker mobilization against the current government policy.
Fiom is first out of the blocks with an 8 hour general strike “in support of and in preparation for” the CGIL general strike that will protest the Jobs Act, details of which will be clarified on November 12. Fiom’s national secretariat has the mandate to undertake its strike around two large national demonstrations to be held in Milan on November 14 and 21.
