Italy: a protocol on how to deal with the consequences of UniCredit-Capitalia’s merger on working conditions and employment

On August 3, the future group UniCredit-Capitalia and trade union organizations signed the first "protocol for the management of the integration process" as part of the merger procedure which started on July 9 (see our story 070622).This agreement sets a limit of 5.000 voluntary leaves in three years and supervises this operation's consequences on working conditions and employment. There is an important innovation: the management negotiated with unions before it presented its new strategy and the plans to reorganize its activities, which had to be defined while taking this agreement into account. Here are the protocol’s main points :

  • Incentives to retire on a voluntary basis. It will be open to all workers who can pretend to an old-age pension (approximately 2.000 employees): the first possibility to leave is planned for October 1, 2007.
  • Voluntary membership to the Solidarity Fund’s extraordinary benefits. All employees who can pretend to an old-age pension before July 1, 2015 can register before October 21, 2007. Four “exit waves” are planned, with an annual limit for leaves (1/1/200
