Italy: CGIL calls on Cisl and Uil to follow for a general strike

The CGIL says that over 100,000 people took part in the national demonstration in Rome on November 14 – with the tagline “Work and the Crisis: we demand answers” – to ask the government to adopt appropriate measures to combat the crisis’ impact on employment. This demonstration concludes four weeks of rallies organized by the CGIL on the four biggest squares of Rome, where fighting staff representatives from all Italian regions followed one another. CGIL leader Gugliemo Epifani pointed out that the worst effects of the crisis on employment will be visible soon, with an increase in restructurings, layoffs, and businesses hit by the crisis closing. Even if the recovery arrives, he thinks it will be 6-7 years before one can see a positive impact on employment. Mr. Epifani reminded that, this year, 570,000 jobs were cut, including 300,000 precarious jobs. Repeating the CGIL’s request for a “true industrial policy” and investments into innovation and research (see our dispatch No. 090900), he accused the government of “doing nothing” to counter the crisis’ impact on employment.
