Italy: CGIL research institute says workers’ buying power dropped by nearly EUR 5,500 between 2000 and 2010

“Real” drop.  The Ires’ 5th report, presented on September 27th in Rome, is explicitly entitled: “Wages in Italy in 2000-2010: a lost decade.”  It points out that, between 2001 and 2010, GDP, employment and productivity increased by “next to zero.”  By analyzing the process of gross and after-tax remuneration versus real inflation over the same period, the Ires calculated the cumulated loss of purchasing power for gross wages: €3,384 (however, between 2002 and 2003, it seems that it was over €6,000), combined with a fiscal drag (when gross wages increased during a period of high inflation will be more taxed whereas its real value isn’t increasing) of €2,069, for a total loss of … €5,453.
