The 16th CGIL Congress, organized in Rimini between May 5 and May 8 under the catch phrase “to defend work and free rights,” was tainted with the crisis, but not the economic crisis alone. Indeed, for the first time in the confederation’s history, it ended with internal division. General secretary Gugliemo Epifani says this split isn’t about the analysis of the situation but about “the ways to face it.” Out of the 156 new members (with 41.6% of women) of the steering committee that reelected him until September 20th when his term ends, 27 are from the opposition, in proportion with the number of votes – 17.08% – gathered by the second program (see our dispatch No. 091036).
