On June 16th, the Fiom celebrated its 110th birthday. The Federazione Italiana Operai Metallurgici (“Italiana” was replaced by “Impiegati” at the Congress in Turin in 1946) was founded in Livorno on June 16, 1901. to celebrate its birthday, the Fiom came up with a program of celebrations and debates which, starting in bologna this past weekend will last until September across the country “with the five watchwords of the demonstration of October 16th: democracy, rights, legality, work and collective agreements.” On this occasion, the Fiom launched a new online social network, the FiomNetWork (www.fiomnetwork.it), functional since Saturday, June 18th, where “one talks about work, workers, democracy at work, or national or local collective agreements.” This is a first experience for an Italian union Claudio Scarcelli, in charge of electronic communication for the Fiom, told Planet Labor.
