Italy: government adopts new “anticrisis” measures for young people

Whereas warnings on the conditions of young Italian people are multiplied – according to recent data by the Istat, their unemployment rate is 26.2% against 8.6% for the entire population, and 44% of workers under 24 have an “atypical” contract” – the government answered with the program entitled “Right to the future.”  It was presented to the media on November 24th, by the Minister of Youth Giorgia Meloni, and the President-in-Office, Silvio Berlusconi, just before the CGIL’s large national demonstration and with the student mobilization against the academic reform in the background.  This program provides for five initiatives regarding work, housing, training and business start-up.  “The decrees making up this program have all been signed” the Minister pointed out, adding that the €316M budget is “entirely funded: and that the total budget will be €300M with public and private partnerships.  She said this program would come into force in January 2011.  Here are the key measures.
