Italy: home stretch before the creation of a big chemistry, energy and textile federation within the CGIL

Planned merger. Ratified at the last CGIL congress in 2006, the merger of the Filcem (chemistry) and Filtea (textile) was slowed down by efforts against the crisis and the separate agreement on the conventional system. It got a power boost on October 15 when the executive committees of the two unions unanimously approved the creation of a signel executive committee. This latter will be in charge of preparing the merger of the two organizations during the next CGIL congress, in the spring 2010. The Filctem will represent workers in chemistry-pharmacy, textile-clothing and footwear, plastic rubber, glass, skins, ceramics, spectacles, industrial laundry, lamps and display, energy (oil, gas transport, mining) and services with a “high technological significance”: electricity, water and gas. Alberto Morselli, Filcem leader, was elected general secretary of this transitory committee, and Valeria Fedeli, Filtea leader, was appointed deputy general secretary.
