Italy: in Milan, unions and local authorities create a fund to help workers in danger of social exclusion

The Milan city hall and the CGIL, Cisl and Uil unions presented to the press, on January 12, 2009, the Fondazione per il Welfare Ambrosiano. The creation of this foundation was proposed by unions almost two years ago. They provided almost €2 million from resources stored up since the 1970’s within the framework of local bargaining in the name of funding for social action. This project is part of the Milan city hall’s initiatives to support the city and its surroundings, hit by the economic crisis. The goal is to “answer the needs of underprivileged workers in danger of social exclusion.” The foundation will start working in March to support people sent to partial unemployment (Cassa Integrazione – CIG, see our dispatch No. 080932) and jobseekers who work or used to work in Milan, whatever their type of labor contract, and whether or not they are residents.
