After six people died in Sicilia on June 11, the three metalworkers' union federations organized, on June 17, 2008, a national one-hour strike, which didn't get much support. The government announced an extraordinary plan in terms of health and safety and invited the social partners to be involved in its development and in a joint proofreading of the Testo Unico (see our article No. 080334). The six deaths of Wednesday, June 11, the Italian average of three deaths a day (out of 1 million accidents a year), which put Italy last of the EU-15 countries, has been overrun. The list of employees who died at work since the beginning of the year almost reaches 500 names already. According to the National Institution for Insurance against Industrial Accidents (INAIL), deadly accidents are increasing again, after a slight drop last year.
