Italy: the agreement on Fiat’s 2008 result bonus splits unions up again

€600 isn’t unanimous. Since the proposition to give €500 for the 2008 result bonus (as opposed to €1,096 last year) launched strikes, the management of the car manufacturer improved its offer on July 16, up to €600 gross. The Fiom rejected it but the Fim, Uilm, Fimsic and UGL accepted it, signing an agreement with the management on July 17. For its part, the Fiom underlined that, after short-time working, the annual average income of the workers (€19,000) should be cut of almost €3,000 over the year. Therefore, the Fiom judges that Fiat’s proposition is “insufficient,” reminding that, in 2008, Fiat made the best results in its history (€1.7 billion in profit).

Motivations of the signatories. For the signatory unions, who wanted to “get out of a lasting situation,” Fiat’s proposition includes two novelties. First, the bonus will be the same for all employees, regardless of short-time work
