CGIL and UIL, the two union confederations that organized the December 12 general strike protesting the Jobs Act and the Stability Law, declared an average participation rate in excess of 60% with more than 1.5 million taking part in 54 strike marches that were held from the North through to the South of the country. Furthermore the strike was ‘well represented’ throughout, as much across the big industrial names as in the public sector and encompassing the transport sector, the retail sector the service sector. The first effect of this is that the Minister for Labor has invited the unions to a meeting this week.
“An extraordinary day of absolute protagonism in the labor arena which, by taking over front stage, marks a crucial shift in mobilization against bad government choices towards real change.” This is how in their joint press communiqué CGIL and UIL qualified their December 12 general strike, in which they expressed their “strong satisfaction in its total success”. Their key demands? Improve the Jobs Act and the Stability Law (c.f. article No. 8775).
