Italy: the Fiom is organizing to reconquer union rights at Fiat

Starting on January 1, 2012, Fiat lost union representation rights at Fiat following the separate agreement of December 13 (see our dispatch No.  110779), the Fiom no longer receives contributions from its 11,500 members working for the carmaker (economic losses around €1.5 million), no longer has union space or permits, and workers can no longer elect this organization’s representatives.  The Fiom pointed out that, in addition to violation the Italian Constitution and Labor Law, this agreement also violates two ILO conventions: No. 87 on the “freedom of association and protection of the right to organize” and No. 98 on “the right to organize and collective bargaining,” both ratified by Italy in 1958.  Legal initiatives the Fiom is looking into include the possibility of appealing to the ILO.  On December 15, the union adapted the “I want the Fiom in Fiat” campaign (see our dispatch No.  110738) at global level via the Labour Start site.  Every signature calling for “the respect of international labor law and the possibility for Fiat and Fiom-CGIL workers to enjoy all their rights at work” is automatically sent to the Minister of Labor (there were more than 5,700 on January 6).
