Italy: the government launches measures against the crisis

On Friday, November 28, 2008, the Council of Ministers approved the decree-law containing measures to face the crisis. Positively welcomed by the Confindustria employers' confederations and the Cisl and Uil unions, this decree is criticized by the CGIL which says that it is not enough given how serious the crisis is and confirmed its call for a general strike on December 12. The decree-law approved by the Council of Ministers includes measures to reduce the impact of the global recession which seriously affects Italy. Most will come into force on January 1, 2009. Here are the major measures concerning the labor issues :

  • The pilot measure to increase productivity (see our dispatch No. 080424), which decreases taxation to 10% for bonuses and productivity wages in the private sector, will be renewed. However, the limit of wages concerned goes from €3.000 to €6.000 and
