After several weeks dithering, negotiations planned between the Italian government and social partners on welfare pattern and labour market finally opened on March 22. In its inauguration speech, the head of government, Romani Prodi, set the priorities : to gradually raise retirement age, to guarantee a better social protection, notably for young people and precarious workers, and to reform the unemployment insurance system, one of the most limited ones in Europe at the moment.
