Italy: the “yes” for the social protocol won by a landslide

The results of the referendum on the social protocol, which took place last week (see our article No. 070826), exceeded everyone's expectations : the "yes" won by 81.62%, despite a large majority of "no" on metalworkers" side. Consequently, the Ministers" Council approved, on October 12, the bill that will enforce the protocol, nonetheless including a few changes. These changes, made to ensure that all political parties in the government would support it, upset union and employers' organizations which see in it a lack of respect for the negotiated item. 5.115.054 people took part in the referendum on the July 23 Protocol (see our article No. 070826). 78.32% of active people and 93.50% of retired people voted “yes”. According to final results, the “yes” totals up to 81.62% of the votes. This is a historic score which even exceeds that of 1995 on the Dini reform concerning pensions when the “yes” had won by 64%.
