The meeting between Fiat, the government and unions, held at the headquarters of the Department for Economic Development on Friday, January 29, didn’t reassure unions, mobilized since the announcement of the shutdown of the Sicilian plant (see our dispatch No. 091103). Even though the government says this meeting helped “move forward,” the Fim-Cisl, Fiom-CGIL, Uilm-Uil and Fismic union organizations confirmed the four-hour strike planned for February 3 in all Italian establishment to protest against the shutdown of this factory, which employs about 2,000 people with equipment manufacturers. Talks on the future of the Sicilian plan will continue during a “technical meeting” on February 5, still at the Department for Economic Development, where the “six or seven” industrial proposals to take over the establishment in 2012 will be examined.
