For some weeks, several individual mobilizations have sounded alarm bells over the impact on Italy’s industrial future of divestitures, closures and offshoring, being implemented by various multinational companies operating in the country, including Thales, Alstom, and Eni.
More than 3,000 workers at energy company Eni demonstrated in Rome on Friday 19 February during the third national strike called for by Filctem-CGIL, Femca-Cisl, Uiltect-Uil, and UGL Chimici, which led to the closure of all the group’s operations in Italy. The announcement of the sale of 70% of its chemicals business (Versalis) to the US investment fund SK Capital, the closure of its Gela site in Sicily, as well as the divestiture of Saipem and Gas & Power have spurred union mobilization effort
