Coming into force on 01 April in Japan is an ‘equal pay for equal work’ principle that aims to narrow pay differentials between regular and irregular workers. This represents a fundamental development for the country that has almost 40% of its active labor force in precarious forms of employment.
According to the Japanese Labor and Social Affairs Ministry, ‘ensuring fair treatment for workers irrespective of the type of job,’ is the objective of this new legislation. So, from 01 April 2020, ‘all unreasonable differences in the treatment of employees on permanent/full time arrangements and those on fixed term/part-time/temporary arrangements will be prohibited.
