The Japanese government has established a working group dealing with human rights in corporate supply chains, the country’s trade minister Koichi Hagiuda announced on Tuesday 15 February. The panel is to publish guidelines for companies by the summer.
In the view of the trade minister, the upcoming due diligence guidelines will serve first and foremost to help Japanese companies remain competitive in a world where human rights are increasingly being factored into the ‘rules’ of international business, and where many countries are not only adopting guidelines, in line with the United Nations’ 2011 Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, but also regulations and even laws with severe penalties, such as those in the United States,...
