The international and European industry, wood and construction union organizations (IndustriALL Global and IndustriALL Europe IBB and FETBB) are organizing a world day of action on April 28 commemorating those who have died or been injured through work. In this way they intend to send a clear message to both Holcim and Lafarge management teams that there can “No merger without workers’ health and safety rights”. In addition the unions are trying to keep the pressure on management so that social aspects are taken into account during the merger of the two companies.
A day of action designed to put the question of health and safety on the table. April 28 is about showing that the situation in both companies is at a critical level in terms of workplace mortality rates. In 2013, 47 Holcim staff died at work with whilst the number for Lafarge was 26. 63 other workers also indirectly met with their deaths.
