Lithuania: government takes measures against unemployment

After the actions undertaken in the first 2013 quarter for young people (subsidies for the first recruitment), with the support of the European social fund, the government presented a new program entitled “More Jobs 2014-2020.”  The objective is to combat unemployment in general, and especially youth unemployment.  This program, approved by the tripartite committee (State and social partners) was established with difficulty as it tackles varied topics covering social security, education or even farming, and the government called on experts, academics and union representatives to think about it.  It mostly relies on two levers: improving the match between training and labor market needs, and promoting job creation by encouraging entrepreneurship.  (Ref.  130599)

Employers, schools and unions working together. The backbone of the program is cooperation between the schools and the social partners. Thus, for young people to make use of their skills as quickly as possible, it was decided that jobseekers under 25 would systematically be offered, within 4 months, an internship, an apprenticeship place or a job. For that purpose, the number of apprenticeship places will be doubled until 2020 to better match training and businesses’ concrete needs.
