Mexico: 10.5 million euros to help tourism workers

Direct aids and agreement against layoffs. Unlike previous programs, aimed at supporting businesses in the tourist industry, this one is directly addressed to workers, mostly in the hotel business. They will receive financial aid for a maximum of two months, calculated on Mexican minimum wage. The beneficiaries will receive between one and two minimum salaries per month, i.e. between 1,300 and 2,600 pesos (€68-136) in addition to remuneration given by their workers. The objective of the program is to help workers whose income has decreased and, therefore, prevent their employers from cancelling their position. Indeed, the program introduces the concept of shared responsibility: the public powers give economic support to the workers and, in exchange, the employer promises not to lay off and to keep on paying its employees’ social contributions.
